Privacy Security – What I’ve done so far (pt.1)

Alright. For my first post, I’ll start with what I have primarily done.

Delete your Facebook Account

Don’t lie to me and say that you don’t see this coming. Facebook is one of the largest targets when it comes to personal information.

One of such examples is the not-so-long-ago Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal. Millions of users had their personal data harvested and used for political advertisement purposes. Of course, this was done without their consent.

“I don’t care about my timeline. They can’t take money from my Facebook account!”

With the data collected from an average Facebook user, one can create a very detailed psychographic profile. That profile is very valuable. So precious.

Recommendations? If you have to use social media because of society, use a dummy account devoid of all your information and just use it to perform necessary actions.

Start using a Password Manager

Password managers are the bomb. You can store your accounts and generate passwords while keeping them safe from malicious actors.

While there are many online password managers that offers a high quality user experience, I prefer to use offline ones.

Change passwords if you haven’t already

It may already be that your account information (and passwords) have been leaked by hackers.

Chances are that the average user reading this is using the same password to all of your social media accounts.

That’s not a good habit. Terrible if you have private accounts using the same password. Hackers can just pick any one of your accounts and use your password and gain access to your info without much resistance.

If the password for your accounts is 8 characters and is a variant of the phrase “password”, I think you should stop reading and rethink your decisions.

A password should be lengthy, unique, and memorable enough to be a password.

No, not “p455w0rd”.
